Wanergy Africa Limited is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) registered in 2017 and based in Nairobi, Kenya, with interests in sustainable development in waste management. \u00a0In the last 20 years, our major cities have experienced significant population growth. Before 2010, we had 3 major cities- Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, driven by high rural-urban migration. However, in the last 10 years we have seen growth of at least 44 rural cities driven by decentralized governments that came into place upon promulgation of the Kenya Constitution 2010. This has increased investments in 44 counties previously considered rural, reduced the rural-urban migration and increased urbanization of previously considered rural towns.<\/p>\n
Urbanization has come with its challenges and that is why in the Kenya Strategic Plan- Vision 2030, one pillar of growth, Social Pillar, focuses on environment, water and sanitation.\u00a0 Our passion is to positively contribute towards the achievement of this pillar of growth.<\/p>\n

As a Kenyan, the challenges in waste disposal are evident when you travel around the cities.<\/p>\nIllegal Riruta dumpsite in a residential area, Nairobi, Kenya.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Solid waste is disposed in open dump sites that are currently considered hazardous to human and animal health. The dump sites have contributed to significant environmental pollution and degradation and today they remain an eye sore that is unacceptable especially because many of these dump sites are located near residential areas.<\/p>\n

We have identified one such opportunity in a fast- growing township about 40kms away from the capital city of Nairobi. \u00a0We have established the need for a sustainable municipal solid waste disposal solution <\/strong>that will convert the household, urban, agricultural and industrial solid waste generated in this township, and turn it into a reusable energy source <\/strong>for everyday use and other by-products that can be commercialized to provide jobs<\/strong>, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>, thus contributing to efforts towards mitigating global climate change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This project is expected to respond not only to the pollution challenges in the community, but also provide alternative solutions to energy sources for the manufacturing sector in this town.\u00a0 We have partnered with a local cement company to offtake the heat products that will be generated from our plant. These alternatives to shift to renewable energy sources will further enhance the reduction of air pollution generated by the industrial sector in this town thereby contributing towards Kenya\u2019s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.<\/p>\n

We are developing and promoting the Productive Use of Renewable Energy in partnership with our industrial sector by converting 150,000tonnes of Municipal Solid Waste per year into a biofuel. The \u20ac30M waste to energy plant will provide a sustainable disposal solution, provide approximately 60 jobs and support the agricultural sector with organic fertilizer that will help Kenya achieve food security thereby developing a Circular Economy Model around this project.<\/p>\nFrom solid waste to jobs, cleaner air, cleaner water<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
